SketchPenVr is currently in protype stage. The prototype is for answering one question: Is this tool going to be something artists will use and benefit from?
SketchPenVr is a PC Virtual Reality application (SteamVR) that emulates a virtual stylus pen. The virtual pen is attached to the VR controller and given pointer capabilities augmented by pressure, tilt and rotation sensitivity.
The drawing surface is the computer’s desktop, rendered onto a movable, sizable rectangle in VR space. The user runs digital art software on their computer (see the compatibility list), which they can control with the virtual pen.
One major departure from physical stylus pens is the minimal physical feedback between the pen and the surface. Pressure is gauged visually rather than physically, making it more like using a paintbrush than a pen. This can take some getting used to, but becomes intuitive after a bit of practice. It remains to be seen, however, how it fares against the physical feedback of stylus pens.
SketchPenVr aims to offer an alternative to physical stylus pens that is fun, comfortable and affordable while being a viable tool for digital artists.
